Being A Green Parent

Posted by WeeSprout Blog on

Having a new baby in the house is exciting but can be a little scary, too! As a new parent you want to do what is best for your baby. The great news is there is a lot you can do that also is eco-friendly.

The first thing that you can do is choose to go with breastfeeding if possible. This is really the best option and has benefits for both baby and mommy. This can help mother and baby bond, as well as provide all the health benefits of breast milk to baby. Not having to purchase formula is eco-friendly because it cuts down on packaging waste.

It is also time to give cloth diapers a chance! Dirty diapers are a huge amount of the daily waste your household produces when you have a baby. Disposable diapers can also add up in the budget. Look into the different types and styles of reusable diapers to find the ones that work best for you and your baby. This can save money while also helping to save the planet from unnecessary waste.

Another thing to consider doing to help your household be more green and safer for your baby is to get rid of as much plastic as you can! This includes plastic, disposable water bottles. Invest in a filtered pitcher or a sink filter to avoid drinking extra toxins or chemicals from tap water (this is especially important while mom is pregnant or breastfeeding).

Saying goodbye to unnecessary plastics in the kitchen is also a good idea. Some plastic containers can allow chemicals or toxins to be absorbed into food, especially when heated. Instead, try using glass to store and heat food.

Using seasonal fruits and vegetables that are grown without pesticides and chemicals is another way to help keep your baby healthy and happy. Making your own baby food can be a bit time consuming but at least you know exactly what is going into your baby’s mouth.

Babies skin is very soft and delicate. Make sure that you use non-scented, natural products when washing your baby. Fragrance mean that there are extra chemicals and compounds in the bottle and they could irritate your baby’s fragile skin. By choosing natural, safe products you are also avoiding sending those chemicals into the environment.

It is surprising how many things that are good for you baby are actually good for the environment as well. In the end, by protecting the earth we are ultimately serving our children. We want our children to inherit a healthier earth that isn’t used and polluted.
